A failure at Fastly, a cloud computing provider, has caused many large websites to be shut down for an hour on Tuesday. Websites of the New York Times, The Guardian, Ticketmaster, Twitch and Reddit were inaccessible due to the malfunction. Meanwhile the pages are back online, although they can be a bit slow.
What exactly caused the problems is not yet clear.
Social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook did work, although Twitter sometimes failed in formatting and loading images.
Fastly confirmed that he was experiencing technical problems on his website. “We are currently investigating issues with the performance of our CDN services,” the company wrote. CDN stands for content delivery networks. These networks are an important part of the internet infrastructure, as they distribute the traffic from the sites to users.
