It is reported that “the three largest artificial Islands built runways, hangars, aircraft, radar stations and satellite communications, underground storage for ammunition, barracks, etc.”

This was a direct result of the statements by Rex Tillerson candidate for the post of Secretary of state. He compared the presence of Chinese troops in the Spratly archipelago (Chinese name, nanosecond) with the “capture” of the Crimea by Russia. Tillerson then promised in case of his appointment, to give Beijing “a clear signal” that “he will be denied access to the disputed Islands”.
The Spratly archipelago is located in the southwestern part of the South China sea. It consists of more than 100 small Islands, reefs and atolls, the total area of which is less than five square kilometers. The total area is more than 400 thousand square kilometers
Despite its tiny size, the Islands are important from the point of view of presence in the region. In addition, studies indicate the presence of significant quantities of oil and gas.
The area of the disputed Islands from six countries: Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Philippines and Brunei. About 45 Islands are occupied a relatively small military contingents from Vietnam, China, Malaysia, Philippines and Taiwan.
