Ученые США бьют тревогу: в стране появилась сибирская мольWhy and how it appeared in the region is still unknown.

The first insect found a resident of Indiana James Vargo back in 2010 with the help of special traps. He handed individuals specialist pygmy moths Eric van Nickerchen. However, at first he could not identify the species of insect.

Van Nickerchen found the similarity of the DNA codes from a larva I found on the Siberian elm trees in the Botanical garden of Beijing.

After some time entomologist of new York Daniel Owen Gilrein received samples of green caterpillars that entered the territory of the state, together with Siberian elms.

Scientists, working together, managed to find out that the samples from the state of Indiana and caterpillar from new York belonged to one and the same species – Stigmella multispicata – moths from Primorye in Russia, which has been described only in 2014 Lithuanian researchers.

According to entomologists, while the Siberian moth is not a threat to the American elm, however, their spread should be monitored.

“Despite the fact that Stigmella multispicata, it seems, is not a real problem, it would be nice to follow its invasion of North America,” – noted experts.
