Japan is a country with many faces, changeable as the seasons of the year. Here, pieced together thousands of years of tradition, modern technology and fantastic mix of different Asian cultures in one way or another influenced our perception of life. Says Yoshiko Oshima.

I would say that the Japanese are pretty conservative people. And it’s not a stereotype, and the truth that most of us – a modest aesthetes and workaholics. And the Japanese are very good in terms of the transformation of anything in user-friendly formats – from Bento boxes for lunch to the latest cars.

I mean that any idea or thing sooner or later finds its ideal form (or even a few, any flavor) in order to make it nice and comfortable to use, we have honed this skill over the centuries, and I am very proud of this national talent.

The Japanese Islands only seem small on the map, and in fact the country is not so easy to drive around for a week. In the North-East and South-West regions offers a completely different climate, culture and even languages. I’m not sure the Japanese people from the remote corners of the country will be able to find a common language, and it’s not a metaphor because the local dialect may have very little in common.

Will definitely visit the ancient Kyoto! Most tourists can’t resist the magnetic attraction of the former Imperial capital of Japan, with its ancient temples, gardens and palaces.

Also, I recommend a visit to the volcano Karuizawa for the beautiful autumn landscapes and the bonus for thrill-seekers – one of the most active volcanoes in the country. By the way, because of the continuing volcanic activity in Japan has many sources of hot mineral water, which are very popular with the locals and travelers. We call them Onsen – the sources themselves and the accommodation near them. The hot springs are open and closed. The water is very good for health, skin and overall relaxation.

Understandably, tourists are primarily looking for “real” sushi, chicken teriyaki and ask in restaurants ridiculous questions about the puffer fish. If you want exotic, try basashi of raw horsemeat, a popular snack traditional izakaya (Japanese call it pubs) with seasoning of grated ginger and sweet onion.

Those who come here for the first time, it may seem that Japan is an expensive country, but you need to know the time and place. First, of course, it is better to buy during sales – from early July to early August or in January, when prices could fall 20% to 80%. In addition to summer and winter happen (though not as extensive) sales during the “Golden week” in may or Halloween in October. And of course, the fashion for the November black Friday and got to Tokyo.

Secondly, if shopping is one of the main purposes of your visit to Japan, still a great time New year and January. Winter sales in Japan more popular than the summer and the first days of the year – the days fukubukuro when people are lining up for “bags of happiness” (bags, boxes, plastic bags) full of different things, sometimes very steep – so the Department stores are getting rid of goods, freeing up space for new acquisitions.

These sales usually start the second or third, and in some stores from the first of January. However, remember that it’s a lottery: although the case and the best, there’s always a chance to get tsubokura – bag with things that you don’t need.

Where and what to buy? The Shinjuku area around the namesake and the country’s main railway station is equipped with huge Department stores such as the famous Isetan, mile, Lumina. Clothing, accessories, cosmetics, any technique in Shinjuku there any products like the world-famous and unfamiliar to you, but also great brands.

Near the station of Shibuya (or Shibuya, if so accustomed to) malls Shibuya 109 and Hikari, as well as trendy Harajuku with its main “arterial” streets of Takeshita and Omotesando. Shibuya is home to many Japanese brands, known all over the world!
