In this town regularly, new high-rises.
In the project “Phantom Shanghai” canadian photographer Greg Girard has directed his lens at the city in the time of important changes.
For many decades, Shanghai was like frozen in time, and then suddenly overnight everyone began to modernize in an attempt to keep up with the construction boom in the growing metropolis of Beijing. Trying to catch up, the authorities have demolished whole areas of Shanghai, hundreds of thousands of residents were forced to leave their homes, and traces of the past were erased.
Girard lived in Shanghai at the peak of these changes and captures the transformation of the city, which was happening right before his eyes: two versions of Shanghai are trying to coexist in the same space.
