The evening of 28 September in Reykjavik, in Iceland, by resolution of the city Council turned off street lighting in order that people could enjoy the Northern lights.

It is reported by The New York Times.

The aim of the campaign is to reduce light pollution to a minimum, to create the best conditions for viewing the Northern lights. The natural phenomenon is expected in the area 21.00–22.00, so the city decided to make the hour “blackout” at 22.00.
However, the Northern lights showed a slow start”, so that lighting is not included until midnight.

Icelandic police called to admire the natural phenomenon with caution, reminding of the dangers of observing the phenomenon in the street or in the car on the roadside.

Residents and guests of Reykjavik published in social networks “stunning” photos of the Northern lights.
