The Internet saved

Интернет спасенDear members of the movement Avaaz

For 5 years we struggled with the corporate giants for saving the Internet and it looks like WE WON!!!!!

We have received confirmation from everywhere – first the US, then Brazil and India. Last week a senior official from France (having the right to vote), even before the announcement of the EU law on the protection of Internet to half a billion people, said:

Интернет спасен“I have to admit that some of the tweets and messages I received, I was touched. People asked me to “save the Internet” and stop its capture by the corporations”… Yachthotel reply all

Sébastien Soriano, head of the regulatory authority “ARCEP”

The official announcement of the law has provoked a flood of an unprecedented number of comments – up to 640 minutes – and most of them from Avaaz!

The Corporation wanted to make the Internet fast for the super-rich and slow for everyone else. We fought for the principle of “net neutrality” – the same Internet for all, without exception!

It was a battle on a global scale, covering 4 continents and 5 required years of experience:

United States – 2.5 million of us have joined the US Senator who threatened to block the discussion, reading the names of signatories to our petition in the Senate. Attempt to pass a law failed! Victory!!

India. Partners Avaaz, together with local activist groups and tens of thousands of our members from India joined the call for Minister of communications and telecommunications!

Brazil: a large number of members of Parliament is really supporting our campaign, contributing to the adoption of the “Marco Civil”, the most advanced law on the protection of the global Internet. Victory!

Europe: telecommunications Corporation are actively looking for holes in the conquered us with such labor law on net neutrality. We stopped them. The press doesn’t usually like stories with a happy ending, but from this they were delighted. You can read about the recent victories on the websites of Reuters, Tagesspiegel, Politico, EFE, Euractiv and the Wall Street Journal. Victory!

The Internet is more than just another issue to be addressed. This is a huge step forward in terms of opportunities of bringing people together. Network inequality could convey the power of these possibilities corporations get their sites loaded faster and worked better than the sites of small organizations, bloggers or non-profit organizations like Avaaz.

But we took advantage of the power of our connection to this relationship to protect. Net neutrality is now a standard for the whole Internet space.

It is a symbol of hope for every trial faced by the world. If we stick together, we can build the world of which we dream.

With joy and gratitude

Ricken, Alice, Ben, Luke, Pascal, Emma, Fatima, Wissam and the whole Avaaz team
