The school was built in Helsinki.
In a new and growing area of Helsinki, Finland — Kalasatama — now had its own kindergarten and school. The project, developed by Studio JKMM Architects, is divided into two phases: the first phase completed in spring 2016, and full completion is planned for 2020, after which the school will be able to learn about 700 children and adolescents.
The three-storey building that follows the winding shape of streets will be placed under the roof of a kindergarten and school. His friendly and cheerful facade clearly stands out among the monotonous houses of the surrounding area.
The Foundation of the building is reinforced concrete structure, the wavy roof has a wooden structure. A distinctive feature of the building is bright facade is covered with multicolored panels from fibrous concrete. The upper part of the wall is draped in white aluminum mesh that protects from the weather or sun.
Classrooms are designed to meet the basic requirements of modern pedagogy. With traditional desks and dusty classrooms was finished, and the teacher should no longer sitting motionless at the table. The environment stimulates and encourages interactivity. Space and furnishings provided for different functions, and students can move from one room to another. Individual training zones can easily be modified and merged with each other due to the sliding walls.
In itself, the school building is an educational tool. All technical equipment is left open so children could see it and understand the principles of functioning of the environment. Work performed by staff is also not hidden from the eye: and training, and office space are visible through large Windows throughout the building. The idea behind such organization of space is to foster the spirit of community and develop social skills.
An important role in creating a friendly atmosphere is an art. School building participates in the “Percent for art”, according to which part of the budget allocated to the creation of contemporary works. Following the completion of the first phase of construction in the kindergarten appeared in the fresco of “Game of Shadows” made Heli Hiltunen (Hiltunen Heli). The artist, who will continue in the next phase, will be selected later.
