New tariffs will start to operate after 15 days.
The European Union should be exempt from the US imposed punitive duties on steel and aluminum. This was stated by the European Commissioner for trade Cecilia Malmstrom.
“The EU is a close ally of the United States, and we continue to believe that the EU should be excluded from these measures. In the coming days I will seek greater clarity on this issue. Look forward to meeting with US trade representative Robert Leitheiser this Saturday,” Malmstrom wrote in his microblog Twitter.
The President of the United States Donald trump introduced March 8 punitive import duties on aluminium and steel: 10 percent and 25 percent, respectively. They will come into force after 15 days. Duties will not affect the neighbors of the United States – Canada and Mexico.
Trump said he believes the trade restrictions of the European Union on products from the United States “very unfair”. He also criticized the actions of Germany in trade and defense issues.
The US President added that he is ready to negotiate, if Europe “will manifest a corresponding desire to”.
