Settlement Aura AMBA can be described as Communist, puritanical, feminist, and even iconic, but 450 of its residents are wary of such a characterization.

The basis of community life are the four principles: respect for women’s rights, children’s rights, care for the elderly and vulnerable people, and avoid antisocial behavior. Today, life settlements are regulated by Aura AMBA 13th democratically elected committees that cover everything from education to conflict resolution, as well as the safety of children-orphans.

A large part of the philosophical system stems from the life history of Zumra Nuru, the founder of the community. They say that at the age of two years, he began to ask questions about the inequality of men, which the adults did not know what to say.

As a child, he watched the lives of parents and how much he worked his mother. Despite the fact that he had not received any education, at the age of four years Zumra Nuru formulated four basic principles of his beliefs through observing the world around him.

After leaving the house, Nuru met a group of farmers in the lake district of Fogera who listened to his ideas. Together they organized a commune Aura AMBA in 1972.

In a society that they created, equality of men and women is not discussed. Men are responsible for half of the household chores and upbringing of children, while women make up half the workforce in male-dominated jobs, such as plowing fields. There is no shame or stigma for those who do it. In this progressive society, the often repeated phrase Zumra Nuru: “When I do a woman’s job, I have not lost courage, but only ignorance”.

Members of the community participate in joint cultivation of crops and cattle, where the work is divided according to ability. Each member of the cooperative receives the same income regardless of what work they do, and the rest of the money is reinvested in the industry community.

Lost part of farmland in 1988 as a result of the persecution and uncomprehending local population, the community turned to textile production as a new source of income. This was another exercise in gender equality. Women Aura AMBA working on looms with their male counterparts inside the only factory in the village, and also at home.
