The cause of the catastrophic extinction of animals

American scientists have proposed a new version of the most catastrophic extinction of animals in Earth’s history.

According to scientists, the death of many species 252 million years ago led the outpouring of enormous volumes of magma in Siberia.

Geologists from Syracuse University in the US suggest that the formation of igneous rocks caused a chain of events that led to the late Permian geological period, when they disappeared more than 95 percent of marine animal species and 70 percent of terrestrial species.

The researchers came to the conclusion that the flowing magma influenced sediments rich in hydrocarbons. This set the stage for large-scale release of greenhouse gases and global climate change.

“Our model connects the beginning of the disappearance with an initial pulse from igneous rocks. This is a critical moment in the evolution of life on Earth. Mass extinction may take 10,000 years or less – in geological terms, it’s an instant – but his influence on the evolution of species, we are still seeing today,” said Seth Burgess, lead author and a geologist at the U.S. Geological survey.

Experts also note that a quarter of a billion years ago two large volcanoes, and the main reason for the mass extinction was the second of them.
