Технология Big Data: чем полезно украинцам новое направление The experts spoke in detail of how it works Big Data in Ukraine.

Big Data is called the oil of our time. Thanks to big data, companies can reduce the cost of attracting and retaining customers, areas such as medicine and law, is to improve the quality of the result, and ordinary users – to get services when they need them. Big data is no longer the future, as they have come and cover all areas of business, government and life even in Ukraine. Ukrainian mobile operators use Big Data in their own services and to offer analytical products to business and government. If you live in Kiev, Lviv, Odessa or in the regions, then with high probability you have already noticed for yourself the benefits that the city has brought big data. Experts told more about the applications of Big Data and how mobile operators plan to develop a new direction in technology.

Scope

Important note: before we get to specific examples, it is important to understand that these are impersonal, and neither the operator nor its customers are not aware that, for example, specific Ivan Ivanovich Ivanov eleventh martora in the company of his wife and mistress went from Kiev to rest in Odessa. Moreover, since in Ukraine a little common contract connection, the operators in principle do not know who are their subscribers. They can only guess with some degree of probability, on the basis of usage scenarios of who could be the caller – age, sex, income, vehicle availability, etc., the data not transmitted to the customer – he gets only the dimension.

Kyivstar and Ukraine Vodafone say that the municipal authorities in Ukraine, they provide the data for free, the service is paid only for business. The Vodafone tariffs are not voiced, they say that the individual approach everywhere, yet as those boxed solutions. Moreover, even cases of a global partner in Ukraine will not help – the specificity of each country has its own.

Infrastructure and transport

Operators “see” how to move subscribers: around town, around the country, where going abroad. On the basis of data on the movement of people in the world are created and adjusted public transport routes, built roads and Railways.

An example from the Ukrainian practice. The world Bank provides our country the means to repair the roads. But this money is not enough to Fund all you need to correctly prioritize. In this help big data from mobile operators. The analysis shows how it moves the Ukrainians. And not just the roads, but also between some specific points. Based on this information, you can understand requiring the reconstruction and expansion of roads, and where, in General, need a new road.

Another example from the Ukrainian practice. Using BigData operator, you can track how many people and where you cross the border, and thus to identify where there is a need for equipment of border points and what they have to have infrastructure.

Kiev has used big data to analyze traffic flow between the right and left banks and also from cities-satellites to determine the busiest areas. This city has evaluated transportation needs. Operator data has helped to develop new transport routes that were launched this year.

Vodafone in Ukraine, said that Lviv is requesting Big Data to properly develop the city, build and arrange transport infrastructure.

Tourism and culture

Data about who comes to Ukraine and how he moves around the country, are of great value to the tourism industry. You can use them to create travel guides (to guide the attention of tourists on the objects, which for some reason are not popular), transferring them to the popular tourist languages, build infrastructure where people go, understanding the beginning and end of “high season”.

Within Ukraine, Odessa oblast has used Big Data to understand where the tourists go the most, and where the region lacked the advertising, figure out how many months last season. Also Big Data has become one of arguments to start the train from Kiev to Izmail.

The organizers of the festivals of the operator’s data will help to understand who their audience is, where they came from, what interests. In Ukraine Vodafone say that they contacted the organizers LvivMozArt.

The Internet of things and smart city

Allow large data to find hidden patterns, to approach problems from an unexpected source and to detect anomalies (for example, that some objects consume more electricity than similar others, and therefore have something wrong). The Internet of things and Big Data save city budgets and make the city safe and comfortable.

In Ukraine, due to various reasons, the Internet of things is not too developed, especially in “urban” environment. The Ukrainian agronomists have begun to use sensors in the fields and agricultural machinery, the Internet of things penetrates in logistics and transport. For example, in Lviv there are “smart” traffic lights, the city is thinking about “smart” garbage. Point in Ukraine are “smart” electricity meters. But we are still far from the massive use of Internet of things.

In developed cities sensors are used in utilities, allowing you to control the garbage collection – from the places of accumulation and needs regular cleaning before falling into the place of processing. The sensors are used in the construction of buildings or infrastructure (roads, bridges), they gather information on the status objects inform about the need of repair or replacement and thus save the owners significant funds to help prevent the problem, not to deal with the consequences. The sensors, which are mounted on the fields, agronomists transmit data about the condition of the soil, causing plant care becomes easier and productivity grows. The Netherlands, being a modest-sized country, became one of the world leaders in food production. All thanks to technology in agriculture.

Finance

Operator’s data banks also help in the work. For example, if the client goes to the Bank to get the loan, the Bank may request from the operator Analytics on the mobile number of the customer. Software based on big data and machine learning can predict how likely a person will repay the loan.

Retail

The big data of retail operators useful for two purposes – business expansion and cost optimization. For example, they can help the retailers to understand where exactly his target audience and where there is a need for the opening point. Vodafone Ukraine, for example, and he uses this dimension, opening up their stores. This service operator sells to its customers. It’s PrivatBank, Alfa-Bank, network (Silpo, ATB, Watsons, etc.) and advertising companies (in particular, TNS, BigBoard).

Cost optimization can be achieved by the same traffic analysis at the point of sale. For example, the outlet may change the work schedule, adjusting to the time when it is near most of CA, or to increase the number of employees at peak times.

Why do we need the operators

The operators there is one problem and a large amount of data for its solution. In one of the publications we have been told that they are looking for new ways to monetize what they have. For example, create instant messengers and other services, sell additional services (or at least plan to do it) their audience.

Big data is another asset that can be monetized. And unlike messengers, insurance, books and television demand from the potential audience of services is huge, and the competition not so much. Of course, those can be called like Google or Facebook, but not that they are willing to share what they know about their audience. The maximum help in targeting advertising within its own service. But, first, the operator’s data more connection with ofline, so they are useful, for example, in improving urban infrastructure. In developed countries, where already implemented Internet of things, mobile connections are used most often to “connect” devices. Second, it is difficult to imagine a situation in which Google would be divided with the business data about the behavior of the owner of an Android smartphone, being close with his point, or helped the city in the creation of Smart City services.

Personnel problem

But pinning hopes on Big Data, the Ukrainian operators are faced with another problem – the shortage of specialists in the industry. By and large, in Ukrainian universities do not teach a new profession and until all hope mainly to those who understand the issue itself. The two largest mobile operators – “Kyivstar” and Vodafone took each in his own way to solve the personnel issue.

Vodafone Big Data Lab

This week Vodafone Ukraine announced the opening of its Big Data Labs. The project operator will provide an array of information for developers and experts in big data. According to the company, daily users generating 400 terabytes. The project participants will have access to 100,000 subscribers in eight regions of Western Ukraine (the data will be anonymised, edited and encoded), as well as computing power to work with these data.

The operator interesting solutions for cities and businesses, as well as improving the quality of life. The project will last three months, the entry for participation is already open, the selection will take place until November 24. Participants should be familiar with statistical data analysis, have experience with Python / R. and to demonstrate creativity. It can be independent IT professionals, students and corporate team. The project provided training in the use of the operator’s data, a hackathon and an accelerator for professionals. The winning projects will be presented to investors.

Big Data School from “Kyivstar”

“Kyivstar” for training machine learning and data science have opened the Big Data School. The course is aimed at students, developers, analysts and mathematicians who are the experts in the field of big data. Students have access to anonymised data of the operator on the course and as a course to solve a real business problem of the client. Graduates of the course can get a job in the company. In “Kyivstar” boast that their student and later a young employee bought by Google, and one former student and current staff members developed a scoring system to combat fraud – the product is used as one of the banks.
