Crashed Tuesday during takeoff in Syria, the Russian su-24 was one of the main “workhorses” in counter-terrorism operations. The plane, built in the early 70-ies of the last century, remains the main frontline bomber. And all because of the newest su-34, which was supposed to completely replace “twenty-four” built too small – little more than a hundred pieces. And those weight in gold. They are one of the main hopes Rosoboronexport along with the su-35.
“Duck”, as they call the pilots “thirty fourth”, good. The new bomber doesn’t even require fighter escort, as the idea could be on an equal fight with the F-16 or F-15. But, unfortunately, this can not be said about the su-24 bomber. Haven’t forgotten the grandiose political scandal, when two years ago it shot down a Turkish F-16. Russian pilots are not to blame, they are such developments did not expect. And just didn’t believe that the pilot of the Turkish air force will press the trigger. The fight was unequal. To deal with the F-16 is, rather, the su-30 or su-35.
Another thing is that for the execution of combat missions in Syria bomber fit even now. But for its time the su-24 was an advanced plane. And in some ways even beat its nearest competitor, the F-111, which largely focused the designers of OKB “Dry”. For example, the aircraft can accelerate to supersonic speed at low altitude, while for Americans it turned out to be a problem. The advantage of “drying” – the sighting-navigation system PNS-24 “Puma”. Thanks to her, the plane could launch a missile and bomb strikes at any time of day or night in adverse weather conditions.
However, there are su-24 and disadvantages. Because of them in the media, and especially in the 2000s, the car began to call one of the emergency in the Russian military aviation.
Some Chronicles. Thirtieth day of October, 2012, su-24 crashed 70 km from Chelyabinsk, when he performed a training flight. The plane broke the nose cone. Fortunately, both pilots managed to eject. Ten days later at the airport in Rostov region, “twenty-fourth” during landing skidded off the runway (WFP) and burned. The pilots ejected.
Eleventh February 2015 su-24 fell 7 km from the runway of the airport “Marinovka” in the Rostov region. Both pilots were killed. After that, the defense Ministry suspended all flights “twenty-four”. But then resumed them again.
The sixth of July 2015 crashed su-24 in the Khabarovsk territory. Immediately after separation from the runway the plane had engine failure. The pilots could not be saved, it all happened too quickly – bomber suddenly banked to the left and crashed into the ground.
According to the former su-24 pilot Igor Sulim, the cause of many accidents this bomber became the failure mechanism of the wing, which is able to change flight sweep. This design, due to which the aircraft changes the geometry of the airframe, depending on speed, the car “borrowed” from the F-111. In the 1960s this decision was considered very successful, but subsequently, the scheme began to leave. Now part of the Russian Federation videoconferencing among airplanes with such design have remained the only strategic bombers Tu-22M and Tu-160. And the US air force B1 Lancer. Some military experts believe that the su-24 too difficult arranged, this increases the risk of emergency situations.
The plane stood up to the test pilot, Hero of Russia Magomed Tolboev, who personally experienced the su-24. As told to “Morning” pilot, call the bomber an emergency it is impossible – happens with any plane.
“The Americans was the emergency aircraft F-104, and we have su-7B. I flew on it, falling and ejected. We don’t call each plane. Then the su-24 was ahead of its time. All have fallen, Phantom (F-4) is also falling,” – says Tolboev.
The pilot acknowledged that the engines of the bomber al-21F-3 complex because of the high temperature modes. However, like all turbines, the design Bureau of A. M. Lyulka.
“Titanium blades, and on takeoff can occur the so-called “titanium fire”. It lasts seconds, moments. And to recognize it, we have sensors around the engine installed. If on takeoff had a fire – you need to immediately eject” – says Tolboev.
What happened Tuesday on the basis of “Hamim”, according to the pilot, is an ordinary phenomenon as it is scary sounds. Could be engine wear. Or any foreign objects – the same sand, which is enough in Syria, it works like sandpaper.
“It’s a pity that the guys managed to eject. There’s three seconds is necessary, apparently, delayed the time,” the pilot said.
As reported back in 2012 the former commander in chief of the Russian air force Colonel General Alexander Zelin, by 2020, the su-24 will be removed from service and replaced with su-34. Around the same time they promised to replace the su-24 and su-30SM for the black sea fleet head of the black sea fleet naval aviation Colonel Gennady Pens. But last year, former VC commander in chief of the Russian Federation stated that “drying” will go when the overage, and no dates did not call. All this means that the su-24 flies low for another two years, and most likely more. Despite the fact that the site is “Dry” defines the lifetime of the bomber 25 years, according to pilots, this does not mean that the aircraft will be written off. Bombers are changing the engines and equipment. Then the airplanes are certified. There is only the glider that may be in operation 50 years. By the way, the American B-52 flying since 1959, in the same way as the Soviet Tu-95. Another question is whether Russian pilots quite difficult by modern standards the car. Yet, apparently, necessary.
