A new study has shown that the social lives of whales and dolphins similar to ours, with social groups, complex relations, regional dialects and personal communication.

This is thanks to their well developed brain. An international group of scientists collected information on 90 different species of whales and dolphins, making the first of its kind study to collect such a large dataset on brain size of whales and their social behavior.

The study attributes this complex social behavior with brain size in cetaceans.

“Social interaction allowed people to colonize the entire planet. And the whales in much the same way colonize the ocean,” says Suzanne Schultz from the University of Manchester.

The researchers found a long list of behavioral characteristics, including joint working for mutual benefit, learning each other and cooperative hunting. It was also found that the cetaceans use complex language, which even has a group of regional dialects, and unique signature whistles that act as names. Also whales and dolphins cooperate with other species look after the young, even if they are not your own.
