Scientists from Cambridge University and children’s hospital Los Angeles (USA) came to the conclusion that protein molecules semaphorin present in large numbers in the developing fetal hypothalamus affect weight gain.

“We know that the brain, particularly a region called the hypothalamus, plays a very important role in the regulation of food intake and blood sugar levels”,
explained Professor of Pediatrics University of southern California Sebastien Storm.

During the study, Dr. Sophie crozier conducted experiments on mice, which blocked the signals of semaphorins. After that the brain cells had ceased to grow properly. Ultimately, this led to the increase in body weight.

“We see that semaphorin shape the development of hypothalamic circuits that ultimately govern the consumption of calories”, she said.

The Cambridge University Professor Saad al-faruki, in turn, analyzed data from people suffering from obesity. He came to the conclusion that those who are faced with the problem of excess weight in childhood more often than in healthy persons met mutations in genes that are involved in the transfer of semaphorin.

Thus, the study showed that semaphorin affect the processes that regulate weight.
