Ученые сделали неожиданное заявление о викингахAmong warriors, the Vikings were women.

The body of the Valkyrie, as it has been dubbed the Swedish scientists, it was found in 1880 and is listed in the directory as a female. But the military attributes of burial forced scientists to change opinion: for a long time it was considered that the remains of a man.

And although the written evidence of the era, the myths of warlike Valkyries, flying over the battlefield, suggested that women could play an important role in battles. However, gender bias was forced to dismiss these legends as meaningless folklore. Now DNA tests showed the absence of chromosome Y. That is, it still was a lady who lived in the X century.

A female warrior was buried in the vicinity of the Tag, the largest trade settlements of Swedish Vikings, with full military honors. In the afterlife she was accompanied by two war-horse, weapons, harness and a full set of games, which meant that she belonged to a team ranks and occupied a high position in the squad.

“The complete set of games means that she was well versed in tactics and strategy, and then led soldiers into battle,” says Charlotte Wendelstein-Johnson, a scientist from Stockholm University. “And it was not a mythical Valkyrie, a woman warrior of flesh and blood.”

Re-analysis of the remains confirmed the identity of their woman – bones thin and delicate, and the pelvis is wide. It was a young woman of about 30 and quite tall, 170 cm.

“It remains a mystery the cause of death, as the skeleton no traces of violent death. But this is typical of many graves in Birka,” — says the researcher.
