Swedish archaeologists have discovered ancient burial of victims of the mass murder of more than a thousand years ago.

Numerous human remains with signs of violent death was found in the mound, Sandby Borg on the island of öland, located off the southeastern coast of Sweden. They belonged to the inhabitants of a small village who were killed in their homes or on the street, reports The Guardian.

Along with the skeletons, the archaeologists found animal bones and artifacts, including Roman gold coins, gold and silver jewelry, glass beads and cowrie shells.

Total found 26 dead, including children and the elderly. The remains of the women were absent, and researchers believe that the attackers killed only males. Scientists say that one of the skulls were the four sheep of the tooth, which, according to legends, was to prevent the transition of the deceased into the afterlife.

Some of the skeletons were partially charred, due to the fact that the attackers had either set fire to the house or the fire was started accidentally. Archaeologists found weapons, which indicates that it could take as trophies.
