Nanotechnologists from Gemutslage College in the United States have created a protein that is connected with nanomaterials based on fullerenes and creates a hybrid structure of spherical shape. Scientists hope that in the future it will be possible the appearance of molecules capable of programmable self-organization of its structure. The study is published in the journal Nature Communications.

Proteins that in living cells is encoded by the genes constitute the molecular mechanisms that accelerate or inhibit biochemical reactions, while also ensuring the activity of other compounds. Protein enzymes govern almost all important processes in cells, including the Assembly and reproduction of DNA.

The purpose of the new study was to create an artificial protein that could be implemented in synthetic material and to self-organize with him in the new structure. This material served as the atomic lattice buckminsterfullerene (buckyball) is a spherical molecule consisting of 60 carbon atoms and resembles the shape of a soccer ball.

Scientists have created a protein that can interact with the lattice buckyball and give it a spherical shape. According to the researchers, for the first time in history, failed to obtain a new complex compound, consisting, like the Frankenstein monster from parts of different nature: protein and fullerene. Due to the presence of the carbon mesh, it is able to conduct electricity that cannot make proteins by themselves.

Fullerenes have many beneficial properties and can be used in solar cells, superconductors, batteries and in medicine as antioxidants or anti-virus connection. These properties depend on the molecular shape, however, until now no effective way to give it the desired structure, which restricted the use of fullerenes in the development of new materials.
