SAM Ratulangi PB 1600 cargo ship found in Myanmar aground off Thongwa: conspiracies flourished

The big container cargo ship, SAM RATULANGI PB 1600, was discovered by fishermen of the village Thongwa township (actually, Thongwa is not coastal town!) in Yangon Region on Thursday, 30 August. It was found that the ship has been aground, however she is in a good shape. No cargo and crew was found on board.

There is little known about the ship, except of some technical and official data. SAM RATULANGI PB 1600 was built in 2001 and the last known position was recorded in 2009. However the ship was not lost according to the available data and is listed as active. No incident records or port data available for the SAM RATULANGI PB 1600. She is owned by the Indonesia government and managed by the Lloyd Jakarta. She is 18247 tons gross container cargo ship 178 m long and 27.91 metres wide.

It is unknown how she managed to get to the shores of Myanmar as well as where the crew and cargo has gone. Navy, border guards and police has inspected the ship and concluded that it was freshly abandoned. Myanmar authorities are working with the manager of the ship and the Smith Salvage Company. The later reported that the ship was towed to the Bangladesh.

The Internet exploded with usual bunch of conspiracies ranging from covert operations of the Indonesian government to the ‘ghost ship theory’. According to the theory SAM RATULANGI PB 1600 has been disappeared in 2009 and re-emerged nine years later. Although spooky this is not true. The fact that last recorded position of the ship is dated back to the 2009 is not a proof that the ship was lost.
