Experts have included Russia in the top five countries with the largest shadow economy. Total rating of 28 countries, the report of the international Association of chartered certified accountants (ACCA).

The figure of the shadow economy in Russia is one of the highest in the world, it is almost 84% higher than the world average. The volume is 33.6 trillion rubles, or 39% of GDP. According to experts, the situation is worse only in Ukraine (46% of the GDP), Nigeria (48% of GDP) and Azerbaijan (67% of GDP). In fifth place — Sri Lanka (38%).

The lowest levels of the informal sector in 2016 are recorded in the United States (7.8% of GDP), Japan (10%) and China (10.2 per cent).

According to RBC, the study of ACCA is based on a survey of leading entrepreneurs, as well as the conclusions of the two expert groups. Estimation of the volume of the informal sector is based on the estimated two-sector model of General equilibrium, which includes such variables as consumer spending, investment to GDP, real GDP per capita, employment, taxes to GDP, government spending to GDP and GDP growth rate, the number of Internet users per thousand people.

Analysts ACCA highlights three main factors that determine the extent of the “shadowing” of the economy in each country. In Russia, the experts put on the first control of corruption, the second — the “democratic responsibility”, and the third to GDP growth.

Rosstat data on the shadow economy in the public domain publishes. Earlier, the head of Department Alexander Surinov has noted that its share is around 10-14% of GDP.
