Roche asks to conserve the test systems, shortages reported

The manufacturer of commonly used tests for the new coronavirus, Roche, calls on governments and health organizations worldwide to use it only for patients who already have symptoms of the disease. Only in this way can the supply of sufficient test supplies be maintained, says the Swiss group.

Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) made the appeal not to use tests for the virus too sparingly. “We have a simple message for all countries: test, test and test,” Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a news conference. Only that policy, according to the WHO chief, really works against the spread of the virus.

Roche’s tests are also used in the Netherlands to check whether someone has the new coronavirus. The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) no longer tests anyone in the Netherlands who has symptoms of the disease Covid-19 caused by the coronavirus. There is not enough capacity for this.

Roche says that it will do everything within the limits of the supply to make and deliver as many tests as possible. According to the company, the current maximum is millions of tests per month.
