An international group of scientists found that the tunneling of particles through potential barrier is instant, and not after the end time, as shown by recent studies.

The time it takes electrons to tunneling was measured using attachto device that generates laser beams with duration of several attoseconds (10 to the minus 18-degree seconds) and is capable to calculate when the electrons are released from the atom. With hydrogen interacted thousand of ultrashort light pulses with a total capacity of 30 gigawatts.

Although initially it was thought that tunneling occurs immediately, a recent study which applied the many-electron atoms, demonstrated that the electrons pass through a potential barrier in a finite non-zero time. However, the hydrogen atoms that have one electron, will allow more accurate measurements and calculations to resolve this mystery. The results of the experiment showed that the observed pattern corresponds to those obtained by theoretical modeling of instantaneous tunneling.

The tunnel effect, which can be thought of as the passage of the object through the wall, is observed in quantum systems and impossible in classical mechanics. It lies in the fact that the particle can overcome the potential barrier without having enough energy because of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. A potential barrier called the region of space separating the other two regions of different or identical potential energies.
