Researchers were told what kind of light is dangerous for eyesight

Ученые рассказали, какой свет опасен для зренияScientists have discovered how the blue light destroys the retina of the eye.

Researchers from the University of Toledo in the USA have figured out how the blue glow damage the retina of the eye.

Part of the work was outlined in an article in the journal Nature.

The biggest risk factor for macular degeneration (retinal damage of the eye due to vascular disease) aging. When it destroys the macula — the spot of highest visual acuity in the retina of the eye opposite the pupil. Previously it was assumed that the light wavelength from blue to ultraviolet can accelerate this process.

The scientists concentrated on retinal — contained in the retina of vitamin A, which by the action of light change shape and accumulate, becoming toxic. He also can turn into a lipofuscin — yellow-brown pigment that accumulates in nondividing cells and damaging them. It is also called “aging pigment”.

The researchers added retinal in a number of cell cultures and then exposed to light waves of different lengths. It turned out, the lipofuscin nothing to do with blue light forced retinal to change, followed by an increase in the amount of calcium in the cells. This led to their deformation and destruction. The blue light thus reacted cells not only retinal but also of the heart, nervous tissue and cancerous tumors.

Antidote to this effect is the vitamin E, but it cannot be delivered to all cells. While the effect is not fully understood, researchers are advised to spend less time at the screens of their devices, and at least at night to avoid the blue glow from the computer screens and LEDs.
