Africa, a continent that still remains unexplored and closed off to many tourists. Remaining in captivity stereotypes, we know so little about the culture and local life, the daily routine and a habitual reality. To tell the world about Zanzibar, photographer Askari Moussa Makan founded the gallery Ash Gallery. Among the images posted in exhibitions, you can see portraits, street photos and architecture photos.

Zanzibar – native to Makan the city, he often photographs in the old part where a lot of stone buildings. Today, 27 years old, but he has already managed to achieve success in photography, in particular, he won a silver medal at the competition by UNESCO.

In an interview with Makan tells how he learned to photograph. It all started with the fact that, while still a schoolboy, he saw a home film camera. His father worked at an electronics store and buying the camera. She was treated as a real jewel to touch her was forbidden to anyone. For my father it was important to have a camera, he didn’t even think to learn to photograph. Makan did the first shots under the guidance of a cousin.

A few years later sister Makan went to the UK, and from there she came with a digital camera. Then the guy started to make really a lot of pictures, trying to capture all around.

By 2009, Makana had the opportunity to use the Internet. Rates at Internet cafes has decreased, and he spent hours on end in search of good photos to Google. Most of the users then looked at on the web football games while he studied hundreds of frames to understand what is the secret of a good picture. Initially, he photographed everywhere – at family gatherings, at school, in local festivals. When Makan was able to implement a few of his shots, he realized that photography can become a profession.

Project Gallery Ash started with the fact that Makan with several colleagues created a website where users from all over the world could view and order their work. Eventually they succeeded, and today it is a real brand.

Makan says that taking pictures in Zanzibar is not easy. He explains that people here don’t want to feel like animals in a zoo. It often happens that the portrait can only be done during a conversation with a man when he is willing to open up and tell their story. Makan helps that he knows Swahili, the official language of Tanzania. The locals are willing to talk to him, to trust him with the unseen. Makan tries to show the cultural diversity of Zanzibar: despite the fact that this island is quite small, its development was influenced not only a country of continental Africa, but even India and Europe.
