Italian authorities will investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of 26 Nigerian girls, most of which are teenagers. Their bodies were found in the sea. 23 of them were in an inflatable rubber boat, along with another 64 people.
The probability that the victims had been sexually assaulted, and then was killed while trying to cross the Mediterranean sea. At the moment, migrants are being questioned in the southern port of Salerno.
The Spanish Navy ship “Cantabria” went there, bringing 375 migrants and the bodies of dead women after several rescue operations. Most of the victims were 14-18 years of age. 375 migrants who survived and was taken to Salerno, are Africans from Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Gambia and Sudan. Among them were 90 women – eight of them pregnant – and 52 children.
Last week, about 900 illegal migrants were rescued in several operations.
