NVIDIA developed a new technology that will radically change the look and feel of computer games.
The new development called infinite resolution.
The technology uses vector graphics – it is not usual for developers of a set of points and textures and a mathematical formula describing the behavior of lines. Due to this, the image can be scaled infinitely. The documentation of NVIDIA explains how to use vector graphics to create textures in computer games.
It is reported that instead of creating and packaging a large set of textures, game developers will be able to describe the texture, and not to draw it in a graphics editor. Technology infinite resolution, in turn, on the basis of these descriptions will generate a texture on the fly. Texture resolution technology can choose yourself, and it will allow you to create very detailed scenery. The only disadvantage of this method are the increased hardware requirements.
Another advantage of the new technology can be called protection from “aging”. As an example, Diablo 2 sprites for it were made in the days of CRT monitors with a resolution of 800×600 pixels. If the game did technology infinite resolution, and a modern 8K displays it would look the same as 15 years ago, on the monitors of the time.
It should be noted that when making games in the traditional technology, the designers draw a single texture maximum quality, but the game turns on and copies a different definition (720p, 1080p, 1440p, 4K). Given the fact that all covered with textures, game objects, games take up more and more space on the storage devices. And it also means that someday the game will reach the ceiling – the maximum possible resolution.
