In the new study revealed the process by which natural plant extracts can also fight bacterial infections.
According to a study conducted by James cook University, most unplanned operations carried out to combat infections, mainly caused by bacterial activity.
Researchers have made products based on plants, known as plant secondary metabolites, polymer coating for medical devices, including implants. They are derived from substances such as essential oils and herbal extracts. These substances have relatively strong antibacterial activity of broad spectrum.
“The main advantage of this approach is that we do not use other chemicals such as solvents during the manufacturing process. Thus, there is no risk that potentially hazardous chemicals will be kept in the coating or damage the surface of the material is coated. This also makes the manufacturing process more environmentally friendly,” said senior researcher Katia Bazaka.
The results of the study were published in the “Journal of Polymers”.
