Martian gravity conditions weakened muscle function, reduced their weight and their content of fibers.
Scientists at Harvard University (USA) found that the resveratrol contained in red wine, prevents muscle loss in rats that lived in low gravity conditions typical for Mars. This substance will help to cope with adverse effects of microgravity on the body of the colonists.

To simulate the gravity on Mars rodents hung from the ceiling of the cage with a leash, covering the whole body. 24 male rats were subjected to either normal load (ground conditions) or reduced to 40 percent within 14 days. In each group one half of the animals received resveratrol (150 milligrams per kilogram of body weight per day) and the other only water.
Weekly, the researchers measured the circumference of the lower leg, and grip strength of the front and rear extremities, and 14 days assessed the effect of leg muscles. It turned out that the Martian gravity conditions weakened muscle function, reduced their weight and their content of fibers. However, it is added to food resveratrol retained condition of the front and rear legs at the level of rodents in the “earth” group.
But the protection was not complete: the additive is not fully compensated for the loss of the average cross-sectional area of plantar and gastrocnemius muscle fibers. The very positive effect is due to improved insulin sensitivity and better glucose uptake.
This is true for the astronauts, which in microgravity develops insulin resistance.
