Ворчливые жены спасают мужей от серьезной болезни, - ученые Grumpy wives save husbands from developing life-threatening diseases.

In women, the situation was opposite: a happy family life is associated with a lower risk of developing diabetes.

Disorders in the family, harmful to health, and until recently, this approval was never in doubt. However, scientists from the University of Michigan (USA) was surprised to find that older men who are unhappy in marriage, reduces the risk of diabetes.

Sociologists from the University of Michigan used data from the NSHAP project – long-term population studies of medical and social factors determining the well-being of older Americans. They had information about physical and mental health 1228 men and women, their cognitive function, medications, behaviour and social relationships.

The purpose of the scientists was studying the relationship between quality of family relationships and the risk of diabetes. As you know, 45 years of age and older is one of the important factors in the development of this disease. Also significant is the role of stress, hypertension, overweight and low physical activity. It was expected that in unhappy marriages, the number of cases of diabetes will be higher. But statistics is relentless and amazing.

HOW FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS AFFECT THE RISK OF DIABETES

Sociologists compared the data 1228 married men and women aged 57-85 years collected in 2005-2006 and 2010-2011. During the second stage of the examination of the 389 participants were discovered diabetes.

Project NSHAP used questionnaires were not specifically designed for assessing the quality of marriage, because of Michigan sociologists used statistical approach and put up the required scale of appropriate survey (degree of satisfaction with current relationships, intimacy with a partner, attitude to the partner, sexual satisfaction, etc.) When the team compared the data on diabetes and quality of family life, their surprise was not the limit: in older men a negative quality of marriage was associated with a lower risk of developing diabetes and a more effective control of the disease, if present.

One explanation may be that diabetes is a condition that requires careful and constant monitoring, and constant attacks and criticism of the wives can influence the behavior of men in regard to their health. Simply put, my husband may not like that spouse limited in his power or makes more likely to go to doctors, and he regards such a marriage as unhappy.

In women, the situation was opposite: a happy family life was associated with a lower risk of developing diabetes. Professor Liu, the head of the study, suggests that women may be more sensitive to the quality of relationships in marriage, because a peaceful and quiet life with her husband had a positive effect on their health
