They were able to identify several types of Peruvian birds.

Scientists of the Museum of Hokkaido University and Yamagata University in Japan attempted to identify 16 of the geoglyphs age about two thousand years in the Nazca desert. They were able to identify several species of Peruvian birds, as well as the likely reason why they were of interest to ancient people.

This writes the Chronicle.info with reference to EurekAlert!.

The researchers analyzed the drawings of birds on the basis of clearly distinguishable morphological characteristics, including the shapes and relative sizes of heads, beaks, necks, wings and tails. They also attributed the figures to the birds living at present in various parts of Peru.

It turned out that the geoglyph, which was previously recognized as the picture of the Hummingbird actually is thrush hermit, and other figures captured pelicans. The rest of the figure, which was believed to be depicted condors and flamingos, did not possess the essential characteristics to confirm the initial identification. At the same time, they are poorly matched contemporary Peruvian birds.

Although birds, whose images were defined, do occur in Peru, they live in other parts of the country where there are no geoglyphs. For example, thrush hermit can be found in the forests on the Eastern slopes of the Andes and in the North near Ecuador. Pelicans live along the coast. According to scientists, the ancient Peruvians were attracted by the exotic birds that are not typical for those places where there lived the creators of the figures. Not identified birds could dwell in Peru in the past.

The geoglyphs or Nazca lines is called the giant geometrical patterns printed on the land of Nazca roughly to the XII century. To date, scientists know of about 30 drawings of animals and objects, as well as hundreds of shapes and lines. Because of their large size to see the geoglyphs can only be height. Proposed several versions of their mission, including ritual astronomical functions.
