Microsoft announces HoloLens 2 with a larger viewing angle

Microsoft has presented the HoloLens 2 at the MWC tech fair in Barcelona. The new headset for augmented reality has a wider viewing angle.

The company did not announce how much larger the field of vision of the new device has become. Microsoft does say that the viewing angle has more than doubled compared to the first HoloLens. With the original headset, the limited view was a common complaint.

The HoloLens works with mirrors and lasers to project images onto the visor. As a result, users see a virtual layer over the actual environment.

The second HoloLens follows the eyes of the wearer, so the headset knows what the user is looking at. This is done via a sensor that recognizes depth. The HoloLens 2 can also recognize and register the hands of the user, so that no controller is needed to operate the device. Microsoft demonstrated that with playing a virtual piano.

HoloLens 2 should be more comfortable
Furthermore, the HoloLens 2 must be more comfortable on the head. The weight of the headset is better distributed, because much of the technique is placed on the back of the headband. The visor of the glasses can be folded when the wearer does not need the picture.

Microsoft mainly focuses on companies with the headset. The previous model was also not a consumer version. The HoloLens 2 costs 3,500 dollars (converted almost 3,100 euros) when it appears “this year”.

An official price in euros has not been published. The HoloLens 2 does not come directly into the Netherlands.
