The correspondent of the “New” on the trail of a ruthenium clouds and finds in the southern Urals Grand experiment on humans

Institute for nuclear and radiation safety of France on 9 November announced recorded September 29, ruthenium radioactive cloud over Europe. According to French scientists, the cloud has come from Russia, southern Urals.
Show completely… Later on infected the cloud talking in Germany: experts of the Federal office for radiation protection reported that it has left its traces in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France.

Now it is known: the emission of ruthenium-106 actually took place in late September, near the closed town of Ozersk in the Chelyabinsk region. Russia two months kept silence, and only after outraged Europe, Roshydromet issued its report, recognizing this fact. The most significant concentration of the isotope found in the settlements near Ozersk Mayak site (within 100 kilometers). In some villages in Chelyabinsk region the radiation background was exceeded by almost a thousand times compared to previous months.

HELP “NEW”

In 1948, at the production Association “Mayak” accident at a nuclear reactor involved in the development of weapon-grade plutonium. In 1949, the “lighthouse” produced massive release of liquid radioactive waste into the Techa river, then were exposed to 124 thousand people. In 1957 there was another accident at the “Mayak” exploded the container with radioactive waste. The radioactive cloud passed over Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk, Tyumen areas, creating the East-Ural radioactive trace.

Despite this, on 8 December, the Interdepartmental Commission, created on the initiative of Rosatom state Corporation, said that “the Lighthouse” revealed no violations. And the isotope ruthenium-106 in the air in the region of Ozersk, the Commission also did not find.

Rosatom even announced a press tour for journalists and bloggers at the plant “Mayak” — with a promise to give “to smell and touch the ruthenium”. “New” in the press tour not taken away from two hundred applications from journalists only seventeen. Later Agency “Chelyabinsk today” reported that the trip is canceled.

In Ozersk, where presumably there was a release of ruthenium, don’t get caught without a pass “Rosatom”. But open cities and villages around it live with the same problems. So I’m going to self-press-tour around the forbidden city.

New Muslyumovo (84 kilometers from Ozersk)

The village of Muslyumovo is the slender ranks of faceless one-storey houses, covered with siding. The house was built by “Rosatom” nine years ago, when the Corporation and the government of the Chelyabinsk region decided to transfer the village from the contaminated, deadly rivers of the Leak.

In her production Association “Mayak”, which is now owned Rosatom, in the 1950-ies was leaking radioactive waste. But people even sixty years after that lived close by, bathed, washed in the Techa.

Information about contamination of the river was declassified only in the late 80’s- but even then the question of resettlement was not. In 2006 it was revealed that the “lighthouse” again dumped waste in the river from 2001 to 2004. Soon after there was a draft of the New Muslyumovo.

New Muslyumovo built just two kilometers from the old — and again on your lands. The residents were offered a choice: you could take a million rubles and leave, or get a new house built “Rosatom” for this amount. Of the six hundred families of more than four hundred decided to leave. And 135 families remained. A dozen — took the money, went from Muslyumovo, but then returned, had built themselves houses in a new development.

According to Greenpeace, cancer incidence in Muslyumovo almost three times higher than the average for Russia.

As residents of the contaminated area, muslumova receive compensation for medicines, 400 rubles, but the pharmacy here, no clinic — the only item General dentist, one in five surrounding settlements. About a hundred people in the village have the status of “lukavica” — sick with radiation sickness. But the identity of the “lukavica” it is very difficult to actually give it only to those who have cancer of the fourth degree, to certification, many simply do not survive. Meanwhile, the status of “lukavica” involves additional payments, however small.

Around Muslyumovo six cemeteries, and for them is a constant revival. Many graves of very young photos. Only in November in the village died four local residents — men to sixty.

Ramil mukhamedyarov in Muslyumovo was born and raised. Remembers as a kid playing Flowing hockey, running water back home were lazy all drank directly from the thawed ice.

Ramil previously he was a Deputy of the district Assembly, but after a heart attack declined the post. Now she teaches high school history and social studies.

Says:

— In Japan, after Hiroshima they have a look how medicine has soared. In the nineties the Japanese offered to take our territory under their control: to check, to treat. But the government did not agree on that. For us, it opened a branch of the Institute of Biophysics in Chelyabinsk, but we were not treated, but only explored. At the regional hospital recently closed a rehabilitation center for us — felt that Chernobyl is dead, and we’re going to die.

Ramil said that he was disappointed in medicine, now spends money on trips to traditional healers.

Ramil lives alone, it happened. The walls of the room it cheap Wallpapers and puppies pictures of the wall calendar, on the floor — plants in tubs. Comfortable, although the house does not have this: after the transfer of the village it became clear that in the basements of new homes accumulates radioactive gas radon. Ramil says that in the basement of the school where he works, planned to build workshops, but because of exceeding the permissible radiation standards left this idea. But still the lessons fall into a faint and children, and teachers. Came even to the Commission of the Ministry of education, however, she came to the conclusion that the fainting from malnutrition.

Dosimeters in the village there. The main dosimeter local residents — well-being: when there is any emission, high blood pressure, headache. The residents of Muslyumovo remember that at the end of September a really bad feeling, an ambulance from neighboring villages had to travel more often than usual.

I ask Ramil why he didn’t want to leave when given the opportunity.

— And where I go? As I have no garden? I have raspberries, apples and even apricots growing! he said clearly proud.

By the way, the garden is a great help for most of Muslyumovo families. Live here are mostly retired. If you work at school or in stores. Only recently opened poultry.

Ramil is not the only one, tightly adherent to this dead land. Here’s his roommate Larissa tried to live in Krasnoyarsk with the family — and returned:

— I better would not — so why run somewhere? Where do we still need? All I want is peace of mind.

Mother Larissa was born, raised and died in Muslyumovo at the age of 57 from cancer. Laricina husband, forty-something, and he also has cancer. This year died of cancer two cousins Larissa. Her youngest granddaughter is two years old already consists on the account at the oncologist.

The Old Muslyumovo

The old village of Muslyumovo nine years ago razed to the ground by tractors. On the bare ground, covered with snow, was the only dwelling house, brick, with fogged Windows. This is the home of Gilani.. Gilani refused to move to a new place. From the Windows of his house are visible a brick framework of the old manor and a ruined mill merchants Zlokazova — former serfs, which launched in the Urals after the abolition of serfdom. Around — a bare field with a high dry grass.

In Muslyumovo Dambaev arrived with his brother in the 80-ies, for the big money, they built barns. Already at that time it was known that the earth is deadly infected.

In 1999, Gilani moved the entire family — a wife and five children in their house in the village near Grozny hit tank shell. In that scenario, a slow death from an invisible radiation seemed preferable fast bullets.

In this brick house until recently, the Gilani family. (wife and five children) lived with his brother’s family (wife and two children). In 2000, Gilani, himself a refugee, “adopted” two old men, he took in their house grandparents from Kazakhstan, which was expelled from the country. The elderly were without documents, did not receive a pension. Gilani took care of them, procured them a pension. Grandfather only recently died.

Local administration said to me: “Yeah you chase her.” And my grandmother Vera to me: “take me to a nursing home — will hang”.

In the resettlement village by Dambaeva as all the neighbors were offered a million, but Gilani felt that it was unfair that money should give to each family. My brother and his family went to the neighbouring village of Kunashak (69 kilometers from Ozersk) — and Gilani left to fight. The experience of fighting has a lot. He is an assistant of the Commissioner for human rights in Chelyabinsk region, before even inspecting prisons and detention centers.

Grown daughters Dambaeva gave in marriage — someone lucky to go to Chechnya, to someone in Chelyabinsk. Sons also go to work in Chelyabinsk, but often come in Muslyumovo. Sam Gilani and his wife Zura hence it does not leave.

— Nowhere to go — the home does not have a shelter, — throws up his hands Dambaev. — Build no money and buy no money.

On the way in Muslyumovo is a memorial plaque to the victims of radiation set by the Ministry of foreign Affairs of the Netherlands. Foreigners generally are frequent visitors. Gilani says with a chuckle delegations in white suits radiation protection. Him (though, without a suit) appeared on TV in different countries. So the head of the district now in response to any critical attacks. calls American agent. Although all that is American, is a dosimeter that gave him one of the visitors, an ecologist from the States.

Taking this instrument, we Gjilan go to the Techa — to investigate the level of radiation contamination.

The river is covered with ice, near the shore sticking out of the rotten wooden boards of an abandoned dam, a rustling of the dry reeds. We descend to the Next, desperately dosimeter begins to crack. Gilani tells me that the local is still caught in this river fish. Taking her for sale in Chelyabinsk.

— Ask them: “Why are you doing this?” And they say: “We are being bullied so that we can slack off!”

Dosimeter, if you put it on the edge of the shore of a Leak shows up to 7 thousand micro-roentgen. The norm is thirty.

Argayash (32 kilometers from Ozersk)

In September-October in the village Argayash, where lives a little more than ten thousand people, Roshydromet has recorded extremely high pollution: the excess of the background in 986 times compared to the previous month. Was discovered and traces of ruthenium-106. But there is no panic: many have not even heard of the dangerous emissions, others take this information with skepticism.

I go to the funeral home — a small pavilion, located right at Argayash station. Along the wall in neat rows composed of a variety of crosses. At the table sits a woman in her fifties, is Valentina Ivanovna. Ask if she’d heard something about a cloud of radiation.

— Write, who knows. Go not write in vain. But no one tells us. The authorities do not hear anything.

— Are not you afraid?

— Why fear? You only live once! We are probably already accustomed to. In Chernobyl, too, left some to live.

— Did not you to come more often?

— Yes, as well, everything is stable. But it’s not immediately all show up, eventually, I suppose after ten years.

In the administration of Argayashskaya district, I suggest to ask a question about the radiation contamination to the Department of housing and urban development district, Elmira Habibullina:

— As such we do ecologist in administration there. I’m on this question called to the Ministry of the environment, I say — it is the Ministry of public security of the Chelyabinsk region. I saw on the regional television: Evgeny Savchenko, our Minister of public safety, said no cause for panic. And that’s all. To fix the output, the necessary tools, specialists in the administration nothing. Personally, I’m in the city, information about ruthenium went, I was in Chelyabinsk at the environmental film festival. Come — calling relatives: “What do you have there?” And we all calmly, no panic. We generally think: maybe it’s the duck was? But even if there was a release in September, later in bell beat. And in Moscow you say?
Kyshtym (15 miles from London)

Galina Ustinova was born in the village Nadyrov Bridge, which stood on the river Techa. Now this village there — it was razed to the ground after the accident at the “Mayak” in 1957. Galina was only three years old when her family evacuated. And up to three years parents it and swim in the Techa, and diapers washed. And died from cancer.

Now Galina with her husband Sascha live in the town of Kyshtym, in a wooden one-story house. The house they humble, but with a claim — with carpets on the walls and on the floor. The rest of the lean surface covered with oilcloth. Next to the armchair is the armchair-a toilet for the disabled. Galina rolls her leopard print leggings, a daily ritual: daughter Julia goes down on his knees before her and ties the bandage swollen, covered with ulcers of the legs mom.

When done, I was invited to the table. Covers Julia, her mother moves with difficulty. Sasha sits down beside his wife and starts a conversation:

— I was in the army taught: sparrows are most sensitive to radiation and birds. I fed them. Today did not come about, then release. In September they were not at all! But people do not want to scare, probably about the cloud is ruthenium on TV say — and here we have silence, do not advertise. I do think that nothing had happened. It over France any satellite exploded and knocked all.

Invisible radiation hazard — a topic for idle table conversation with a visiting journalist, and so their worries. Sasha and Galina — a strong economy. Requires strength, but on the table — all of your home:

— A couple of years ago, cherries were collected, they were berries — these are the giants, — Galina shows a convincing fist. — Yes, so unusual, oblong. And we eat it! But we are not afraid: in my garden of nitrates no, all manure is grown.

For lunch Ustinova cooked goulash. And sometimes they stew the meat in a Dutch oven; next time, make pilaf, and then the meat is cut in cubes, “so cultured”. See my confusion and laugh with me.

— We have private owners do not take, — says Galina. — Only store, checked!

— Meat and fish radiation is not so terrible if you know what it is — comforting me, Sasha. Radiation the same is deposited in bones, soft tissues it passes through! You’re just bones obsesiva. And then normally.

PS

In the light of the Ruthenia chief oncologist of the Chelyabinsk region Andrey Vazhenin said the Agency “Interfax” that information about dangerous concentrations of radiation, he does not have. The doctor advised those who are upset, “watch football and drink beer.”
