Two Dutch companies — CirTec Cellulose and KNN — developed technology to recycle used toilet paper in the material that can be used in particular in road construction.

It was tested during the construction of km of cycle tracks, connecting the city of Leeuwarden, capital of Friesland, and the small town of Stins.

CirTec opened the first sewage treatment plant to produce pulp from used toilet paper (according to statistics, in the Netherlands used annually around 180 000 tonnes of toilet paper) and launched a two-year pilot project called Cellvation Project to commercialize the development. With this installation the company reportedly receives around 400 pounds of pulp daily. After cleaning and sterilizing it is a crumbly material that can be used as raw material for other products, particularly in the creation of asphalt.

In the Netherlands most roads are paved with asphalt OGFC (open-graded asphalt friction course), which is porous and permeable. To create such a coating requires a greater amount of bitumen that connects the rocks and sand (from which are derived the asphalt). Cellulose was added to thicken the mixture and to ensure that the bitumen is not dripping from the unit during the handling, transport of material and during the actual paving of the streets.

A Bicycle path was built over a year ago, and, as noted, it is impossible to distinguish from other road sections.

In addition, since this technology (using recycled toilet paper) was applied several times: the strengthening of the dam and repair of the Parking lot.
