In 2007, the American diver Alberto Nava discovered a cave full of ancient remains. For more than 10 years of Grot examined by scientists from the Museum of Saltillo in Mexico and the Institute of ancient history of America in the United States. Judging by the animal bones found by divers, in the glacial period the Yucatan was inhabited by short faced bears, saber-toothed tigers, tapirs, mountain lions, the ancestors of elephants and giant sloths.

Human skeleton from Hoyo Negro, meaning “black hole” belonged to a teenage girl: she fell into the cave, broke his pelvis and died — this is the version of archaeologists. Nayya, as scientists now call it, weighed 50 kg with height of 1.5 m. the Skeleton is almost complete: preserved most of the bones, including ribs, full skull and teeth.

DNA analysis conducted in Germany, showed that Naya was 15, and her remains are more than 13 thousand years. NAIA is one of the oldest skeletons found in North America. Its study will allow scientists to clarify when district of yucatán was populated by the people.

Cave exploration continues. The latest results were presented in August 2017, at the annual meeting of the Society for the study of vertebrate paleontology in Canada.
