The name of the new owner of the mask is not called.
At the auction at The Canterbury Auction Galleries in the UK for $17.3 million left the lot with a posthumous bronze mask of the face and hands generallisimusa of Joseph Stalin.
The name of the new owner of the mask length 31.7 cm is not called. According to retailers, it was put up recently at auction, the Briton, according to which he found the mask in the attic of his grandfather, who was a merchant seaman.
As stated by the auctioneer Dan ponder, he “experienced a kind of shock when the previous owner brought her and asked her to sell”. “He explained how he found the artifact, examining my grandfather’s property after his death, who was a merchant seaman and presumably purchased it during one of the voyages,” suggested ponder.
It was difficult, said the auctioneer, to assess the value of the lot, but the benchmark in this case was another death mask of Stalin, who at auction in 2012 went under the hammer in the English County of Shropshire for £3.6 million ($6 million).
“Nobody expected that the cost of masks will be $17.3 thousand”, – he added.
The death mask of Stalin, was shot by renowned sculptor Matvey Manizer (1891-1966), who was then Vice-President of the USSR Academy of arts. It is also known for his sculptures at the Moscow metro station “Revolution Square”. All, as pointed out by the British edition in bronze was cast in 12 copies.
