A simple solution to the current problems.
The problem of environmental pollution today is very serious, and regularly allocated considerable funds. However, as often happens, sometimes the most effective solutions are the simplest and, importantly, the cheapest. So, this year, the spotlight hit the town Kwinana where simple and you may say, elegantly solved the problem of pollution of watercourses.
In this Australian city, like many other places, there is the problem of pollution stormwater: debris (branches, bottles, paper, cans, different things of plastic) when it rains washes away in the drain pipes and then stand in large bodies of water such as rivers and lakes.
In March 2018, the local authorities decided to try to stop this process, using the special plastic pipe network. As planned, all large debris should remain in the networks, without disturbing the passage of water. The entire process – from design of networks and their fastening to the installation cost the city about $20 000. In this network, are reusable, and the need for manual labour (before that people manually collected garbage in bags on the banks of ponds) is minimized.
For four months in two such networks are gathered 370 kg of garbage. The city regularly cleared the whole “catch” raising the completed network with a crane and setting back already empty. Garbage taken to the sorting center, where separate branches, and leaves them shredded and used later as a mulch, and the rest sort of as General waste.
That the experiment was successful, the authorities Kwinana reported on page in Facebook, and within 48 hours the entry is received 105 thousand likes and it was shared more than 27 thousand people from all over the world, despite the fact that in Kwinana home to about 30,000 people.
Amazing how little it takes to seriously change the ecology of their city for the better. After it became clear that the network really perform the task without any problems, the city has established several networks and plan, so to protect all runoff from storm water pipes of the city until the end of next year.
