Daimler has announced plans to expand at its plant in Ambah (France) power for the Assembly and upgrade it infrastructure to manufacture the world’s first compact passenger electric car Mercedes-Benz in France. The group is investing 500 million euros in modernization of the plant to start its Assembly in addition to the cars that are currently manufactured there for the brand Smart.

By 2022 Daimler plans to launch more than 10 models of new electric cars division Mercedes-Benz Cars. “Smart-plant in Ambah will be part of our global network for the production of compact cars with the leading plant in Rastatt (Germany)”, — said on Friday the representative of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Markus Schafer (Markus Schäfer).

Currently, Mercedes produces a compact model A-class, B-class and GLA at the plants in Rastatt, kecskemét (Hungary), Beijing and in Aguascalientes (Mexico). Last year the brand was produced 620 000 compact cars.

For comparison, last year its competitor in the segment of electric cars, the American manufacturer Tesla, put 101 312 electric cars.

Annual production capacity in Ambah, where Daimler produces double electric Smart car on the go with the internal combustion engine, last year accounted for more than 80 000 vehicles.

Mercedes is also preparing to launch in 2019, production in Bremen is a fully electric sports crossover EQC based on the same platform as the current bestseller GLC.
