American scientists have created a material that can extract energy from human movements, and even simply being curved, for example, on the elbow or knee when sitting. This was achieved researchers at Vanderbilt University and the laboratory Energy Devices.

The new technology is based on a layer of black phosphorus with a thickness of only a few atoms, whereby the device generates electricity, according to the publication Science Daily. Since the basic building blocks of the system Vanderbilt thickness of about 1/5000 of human hair, engineers can make the device thin as much as necessary.

The ultra-thin layer of phosphorus can be placed in almost any matter, without prejudice to its flexibility, and to create, thus, a business suit, for example, which will charge your smartphone. Moreover, the device is able to extract energy from movements of the intensity of only 10 Hz, which corresponds to normal motor activity. And even stable bending of the material generates as much as 40 microwatt per square foot.

It is worth noting that many research groups are developing a similar system based on piezoelectric materials, which convert mechanical deformation into electricity. However, these materials are effective only at frequencies above 100 Hz.

However researchers at Vanderbilt and Energy Devices recognize that one of the difficulties that they face, is a relatively low voltage, which gives the device – in the area of millivolt. And now they are working to increase energy efficiency.

As for security, there is the creators of a new material all right. Even if the device is based on it is short circuit, it will only cease to generate energy and no more. The material is now virtually non-flammable, despite a phosphorous basis. That is, it is possible to burn, say, a blowtorch, but even this danger, scientists are going to eliminate using the solid electrolyte.
