The government of Canada compliance with the new law “For justice for the victims of corrupt foreign officials” imposed sanctions against 52 citizens of different countries, including 30 citizens of the Russian Federation.

“Sanctions apply to persons who in the opinion of the government of Canada, are responsible for gross violations of internationally recognized human rights or acts of significant corruption. In addition, appropriate sanctions will be applied to partners of such persons”, – stated in the message the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Canada.

The assets and accounts of individuals in the “list” will be frozen within Canada and they will be denied entry into the country in accordance with migration law and refugee protection.

The foreign Ministry of Canada noted that the authorities have long “expressed great concern about the case of Sergei Magnitsky, in particular, what this case reflects the state of the Russian justice system and the rule of law”.

Among Russian citizens in the list of sanctions was the head of the investigative Committee Alexander Bastrykin, former head of the investigative Committee at the interior Ministry Aleksey Anichin, and judge Sergei Podoprigora, who ordered the arrest of Sergei Magnitsky in 2008.
