Scientists at McGill University in Canada found that mastering a new motor skill is faster if, immediately after learning to do short exercise for 15 minutes. According to researchers, it will help to speed the rehabilitation of stroke patients or victims of trauma.

The experiment involved 25 volunteers, who were asked to perform two different tasks. The first is to use the dynamometer to control constantly moving the cursor between the red rectangles on the screen. From the force pressing on the load cell depended on how high the cursor will rise. A portion of the subjects did exercise, and some rest. The researchers measured the brain activity of participants using electroencephalography.

After 30, 60 or 90 minutes after the exercise session or rest, the volunteers performed a shortened version of the previous problem, which was necessary just a few times to press the dynamometer with a force sufficient to “touch” the cursor in certain boxes. After eight and 24 hours, the participants repeated the first task.

It turned out that those who performed physical exercise, more effectively and with less brain activity could repeat the task than those who did not train. These participants skill is well preserved and after 24 hours that tells about the best consolidation of motor memory.
