Botulism does not retreat. How to protect yourself from botulism and how to deal with it
From the beginning of 2017 in Ukraine there is an increase in the incidence of botulism: has recorded nine deaths. The Ministry of health spoke about the symptoms and prevention of this dangerous disease.
Botulism caused by the ingestion of bacteria containing the poison botulinum toxin, which affects the Central and autonomic nervous system. Then, due to possible botulism by eating contaminated with bacteria fruits and vegetables, improperly canned foods using sausage, ham, smoked fish. Once in the body, the botulinum toxin is absorbed into the bloodstream and “settles” in different parts of the nervous system, from what the man there are paresis and paralysis of the muscles of the larynx, pharynx and respiratory muscles.
The disease manifests itself at once: from the moment of penetration of the pathogen into the body until the first symptoms can last from several hours to 2-5 days.
Typically, a patient will first begin to bother nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea no pathological impurities. It lasts an average of 20-24 hours. In the future may disrupt vision, which is one of the first signs of botulism.
At the same time there are thirst, dry mucous membranes, swallowing disorder, can change the timbre of the voice. Patients often complain of feeling “lump” in the throat, sore throat.
This condition lasts several days and is accompanied by severe headache, dizziness, insomnia, General weakness, high temperature. In severe cases the patient may complain of feeling short of breath, heaviness in the chest. Developing respiratory failure, which is the cause of death in botulism.
Upon the slightest suspicion of botulism, the patient must as soon as possible to send to a specialist unit, because only there he will be able to provide appropriate care.
To neutralize the botulinum toxin is used a special serum during the first four days, prescribe antibiotics, if necessary, prescribe artificial respiration, and sometimes can put the patient in a hyperbaric chamber with oxygen and high pressure.
In botulism there are often complications, such as loss of muscle of heart, pneumonia, blood poisoning. After discharge from hospital, patients should be under medical supervision from two weeks to six months.
To prevent botulism, you must carefully follow the canning of vegetables, fruits, meat, fish and mushrooms. Before the use of canned foods should be warmed to a temperature of 100°C for 30 minutes to destroy botulinum toxin.
In no case can not eat canned meat and fish, if the iron Bank is inflated or deformed.
To prevent all those who have been used along with patients with botulism infected food, injected serum of type A, b, E and watching them for 10-12 days.
In Ukraine as of 18 July YTD botulism sick 90 people, nine of them died. Eight of the nine deaths was ill due to consumption of dried fish.
In early July, the UN development Programme in Ukraine was introduced 25 courses of antitoxin against botulism. Up to this point, there have not been drugs for specific treatment of botulism in 2014.
