Beijing stops short from calling the war with Ukraine an invasion

22

Reactions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine run in from everywhere. Also from China. And striking: there, the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not want to use the term “invasion”.

If Beijing admits that Russia has invaded another country, it goes against its own principles and international agreements. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, if Beijing recognizes that it is an “invasion”, Russia will fall, and that relationship is important to China in the long run. But at the same time, Beijing does not want to turn the European Union and the United States against it by completely taking the side of Putin. Beijing is very stuck now.

But there is a bright side in the situation: nobody really cares.
