Scientists using the Hubble space telescope got a picture of the galaxy NGC 278, which is located at a distance of 38 million light years from Earth in the constellation Cassiopeia.

The picture was published on the website of the telescope.

At first glance it may seem that the galaxy is absolutely calm, but in fact it is not. Currently in the galaxy there is an active process of star formation. Star formation in the galaxy is somewhat unusual: it does not extend to the outer edge of the galaxy, and focuses exclusively in the inner ring that extends on 6,5 thousand light years.

This strange situation is caused by the fact that NGC 278 has faced less, but gas-rich galaxy. This is a “cosmic accident” led to the fact that the gas inside the galaxy began to engage in violent reaction of star formation.

Dust from lost galaxy was thrown into the sleeves of NGC 278, which made them lifeless.
