Half an hour away from the major Mexican city of Morelia archaeologists have studied the area using lidar to study the ancient tenure still existing tribe Purepecha – neighbours and old rivals of the Aztecs.

Less well known than the Aztecs, purepecha, however it was a major civilization in Central Mexico in the early 16th century before the Europeans arrived on the continent, bringing chaos, war and disease. Using lidar, the researchers found that the newly discovered city of Angamali was more than twice of Tzintzuntzan, though probably he was not so densely populated. The city of 26 square km, thousands of years ago were covered with lava flow.

The use of lidar has allowed scientists to obtain interesting data. So, discovered that the city was a rather unusual layout. The pyramid and Plaza were concentrated in eight areas around the city instead of the traditional location in the center. The researchers also obtained high-quality images of various urban objects: pyramids, temples, road networks, parks, etc.
