The object of the UNESCO world heritage salt mine in Wieliczka stopped mining operations in 2007, after seven years of work. Every year the mine attracts to Poland more than a million tourists.

Over the centuries of its existence, the mine became a series of dark caves in a wonderful underground world with statues, chapels and pillars of salt.

The salt mine in Wieliczka is around three hundred kilometres of tunnels on nine levels, three of which are open for visits. The two-hour tour introduces tourists with the underground salt world. The most interesting part for many is the chapel of St. Kinga, its construction took 30 years and each item is made of salt.

Long network of tunnels, often called “underground wall of China” was manually dug by residents and according to rumors, is about 82 square kilometers.

In 2000, the tunnels were open to the public, but in 2008 they were again closed for restoration. When they’re open again, nobody knows. The tunnels were about a hundred entrances and could accommodate nearly half the population of the city.

They also say that the tunnels were even built schools and other institutions so that citizens could hide out there for a long time.
