200 years ago sailors opened the southernmost continent — Antarctica.

The pioneers are members of the Russian expedition led by Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. Both had a large experience of long voyages.

The sloops “Vostok” and “Mirny” sailed from Kronstadt in the summer of 1819, and after six months went to the ice masses in the area, which was later known as the Princess Martha Coast.

He now bears the name in honor of the discoverer — ice shelf Bellingshausen. It happened on January 28, 1820, this date has become historic.

The entire expedition lasted about two years. The sailors said new Islands, and conducted research in the field of Oceanography.

The appearance of Antarctica on the map called the last of the great geographical discoveries.

In honor of such a momentous event LeMonade have collected the best pictures of Antarctica.
